Keeping cut flowers fresh in Casablanca's climate
Casablanca is warm, bright and often humid — conditions that shorten the life of a bouquet if it's left to fend for itself. These are the few things that genuinely make a difference.
Cut the stems, properly
Cut two to three centimetres off each stem at an angle with a sharp knife or scissors before the flowers go into water, and repeat every couple of days. A flat cut sitting on the bottom of the vase can't drink.
Change the water often
Fresh, cool water every two days — every day in summer. Wash the vase when you change it; bacteria in the water blocks the stems faster than anything else.
Keep them out of the heat
Away from direct sunlight, away from a window that bakes in the afternoon, and away from the top of the fridge or a television. Fruit is also an enemy: ripening fruit releases ethylene, which makes flowers age quickly.
Remove leaves below the waterline
Any leaf sitting in the water will rot and spoil the whole vase. Strip the lower leaves before arranging and pull out any flower that has finished so the rest can carry on.
